The Good and The Ugly

essay : As normal people, we often indulge in gossip and information about celebrities. Jack Shafer (Slate.com) said that the reason behind it is the need of humans to measure their species' prospect and what better proxy than the young, wealthy, handsome and visible alpha-male and -female breeding stock that Hollywood employs?

The Good
Angelina Jolie is said to be a role model celebrity of our time and I quite agree. She is a good daughter and a caring sister to her brother James Haven. She is also a loving wife and mother ( to Pitt and the Jolie-Pitts) and a humanitarian. In 2003, she was the first recipient of the Citizen of the World Award from the UN's Correspondents' Association for her work as a goodwill ambassador with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). She is talented, beautiful, sexy, smart, and rich. Truly, she is the role model celebrity we should aspire to. Although some say that she is not fit to become a role model due to her promiscuous past (like blogger Deborah Ng, for instance), I think the important thing is that you have redeemed yourself and become a better person. If God can accept someone who previously persecuted His followers but later had a change of heart to be a saint, why can't we accept someone with a promiscuous past but who has mended her ways to be a role model?

The Ugly
Britney Spears started out as a sweet, innocent southern belle, but as she rose to stardom, things got complicated for her. She ditched her school-girl uniform for a stroller and diaper bag, filed for divorce, shaved her head, wore mini skirts without underwear, partied, and partied. On the other hand, we could all remember Lindsay Lohan as the cute girl who played the twins in The Parent Trap. She is so adorable and so sweet-looking then that when she came back as a teenager complete with her red hair and hot body highly emphasized in her music videos, we were all the more captured. She is all over the place wearing the most fashionable clothes and partying with the most bankable people. Then with all the glitz and the glam, she became an alcoholic and was even arrested for driving under the influence (DUI). Currently with no projects, she is still making noises with her much publicized relationship (as lovers or friends?) with Samantha Ronson (SaMAN). Meanwhile, Miley Cyrus became famous for her role as Hannah Montana in Disney Channel. Little girls idolized her and mothers adore her. However, since the pictures of her posing provocatively while wearing a very wet white shirt (purportedly for her ex-boyfriend Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothers) caught the media, many mothers were disappointed and decided they should not let their kids idolize Miley ever again. She has a long string of boyfriends that a famous Hollywood critic dubbed her as Slutty Cyrus (Ouch!). Currently, Miley is dating a guy five years her senior and is on a battle with Selena Gomez (another Disney star) for the much coveted title Disney Princess.
They are the paparazzi-mongers. We are all fascinated by them---good girls gone wild; young and rich, losing it all to self-destruction. The whole world follows their every move. Why? Besides being plastered over all the media, it is because of the seemingly bizarre human trait of wanting to slow down at car wrecks. People dig on train wrecks, especially if they used to be bright, shiny trains.
